RITUALS by Foscarini | Design: Ludovica + Roberto Palomba

In different yet complementary shapes, volumes of blown and frosted glass, cut by a series of horizontal lines of varying thickness that are arranged in an intentionally casual manner, filter and modulate the intensity of light with a special chiaroscuro effect. The poetry and the lightness of Rituals treading between the East and West, its rarefaction and materiality draw their inspiration from traditional Japanese lanterns, bringing a suffused and precious light to a variety of settings. Chiaroscura owes its distinctive personality to the delightful lighting effect and to the original sync between form and function. Designed by Alberto Meda and Francesco Meda, Chiaroscura stems from a design challenge: to explore the possibility of enhancing the functionality of a classic luminator, which by definition only emits indirect up light. The elegant and lightweight body, which is totally illuminated and not just illuminating, was the goal which led to the definition of the shape, the choice of materials and manufacturing technologies. Simultaneously understated yet packed with character, it is a discrete presence that masks a concealed technical complexity, in the spirit of Foscarini.

"It cannot be done" is what Crea, the small company in Darfo where Aplomb lamps are now constantly produced, said after having seen the thicknesses suggested by the designers Lucidi e Pevere for the first concrete lamp offered on the market. But the most outlandish technical challenges are the best excuse to discuss things and to test one's reasoning. Watch the video to discover Crea and the birth of Aplomb. Foscarini brings to life design and light ideas, the result of a freedom in research, expression and development, without any manufacturing constraints. Indeed, since it was established, Foscarini has been a company without a factory, one that is therefore free to explore materials and manufacturing techniques suited to develop every new idea, relying on the locally-sourced craft-based excellence. Maestrie is the story of a previously hidden dimension that sheds light on the skill and craftsmanship that go into the making of some of Foscarini’s icons. Discover more foscarini.com/en/maestrie

FAPS is a company that was already focusing on composite materials at the end of the 1980s, an absolute novelty at the time. After having fully thought out the use of these innovations, the firm decided to invest in the production of fishing rods for sportsmen: poles with a length of about 15 metres, of remarkable strenght and lightness. The production of finishing rods, together with other subcontracted items in carbon fibre, represented the fundamental activity of this start-up for years. At the end of 1990's the opportunity arose to also use composite materials in the field of furnishings. The potential of fiberglass and carbon fibre was no loger restricted to a particular kind of technical performance, but could also be applied to different situations, last but not least to the developmentof a innovative image. This was how the collaboration with Foscarini and Marc Sadler began. Sadler himself admits that major "unreasonable leaps" are needed to discover the potentialities of materials and technologies. To achieve success passion and obstinacy are both musts. The experience gathered in fifty years of on-going work with leading italian design companies has made Moretti a favourite counterpart for the most demanding designers. Vetrofond's contribution does not only involve product development. The efforts of recent years to improve the company's entire organisation make it an example of economic rationalism to limit costs and guarantee prompt delivery. The know-how of Vetrofond is organized and structured to make the firm competitive with otherforms of workmanship of a more strictly industrial character. The continuous drive to improve and the focus on optimizing margins at this glasswork are truly impressive. Thanks to these efforts in terms of organisation and technology, today it is possible to create magical products at affordable prices. A lesson that should bring a sense of prime to the entire design production chain. A new perspective, an updated viewpoint, an evolution in the way Foscarini operates in relation to its products. The VITE (LIVES) project reflects the desire to make people the central focus, to talk about light not starting with the lamp – those who have designed, developed and produced it – but about those who live with it inside their own intimate space: the home.
